After conducting a space use assessment for the ± 600 square foot state employee runnels building, it was revealed that there was a great need for a break and community space. Runnels is comprised of the Health and Environment Department.
We determined best locations for breakrooms adjacent to plumbing cores. The design involved taking existing office and storage space on each
of the four floors and quickly convertng it into breakroom space. The rooms livened the view from the atriums with color and natural light
Each break room has a street cafe feel utilizing the existing expanse of storefront. The break rooms are comprised of the same “kit-of-parts” (sink,
handicap sink and microwave, recycling / waste center, chairs + tables, stools + counter, vending machines, acoustic separation, increase in
natural light), but each one has a different feeling, imparted by a defining color and name as well as a unique material palette.
